Frequently Asked Questions
A pre-paid card is a payment card which has been topped up with funds. The card user's spending is limited by the card balance. There is no need to open a personal bank account in order to acquire a pre-paid card. Such a card may be used to make card payments at brick and mortar shops wherever MasterCard is accepted as well as on the Internet.
A pre-paid card is neither a debit nor a credit card.
In making debit card payments, the owner is using funds which are accumulated on their personal bank account, which means that in exceeding the available balance a debit may be incurred, other words a debt which has to be repaid by a certain deadline. Credit card purchases are possible even if the account balance is not sufficient but the bank has granted its owner a certain "credit limit". By paying for goods at a shop, the card owner will have to repay that amount plus interest to the bank.
The fundamental difference between a pre-paid card as debit or credit card is that it is impossible to exceed the available balance on a pre-paid card. The card user can only spend the amount which is actually available on the card.
